The Challenge
An international organisation with 20,000 employees faced a complex challenge in helping their workforce understand potential career paths within the company. With 899 different roles, it was difficult for employees to see both linear career progressions and lateral moves, as well as to identify the necessary skills and competencies for transitioning between positions.
The Approach
To address this challenge, we embarked on a comprehensive analysis of all roles within the organisation. Our goal was to provide clarity on both linear and lateral career paths, making it easier for employees to navigate their career development.
Key elements of our approach included:
- Conducting an in-depth analysis of the competencies and skills required for each of the 899 roles.
- Grouping these skills and competencies into categories to create a clear framework for understanding career transitions.
- Developing a system that allowed employees to identify roles suited to their current skills and roles they aspired to, based on the competencies they wished to develop.
The Solution
The implementation of this structured approach resulted in a robust and user-friendly career path framework. Key outcomes included:
- Creation of a detailed map of career paths, highlighting both linear progressions and lateral moves, accessible to all employees.
- A comprehensive grouping of skills and competencies, enabling employees to easily see how their current abilities aligned with various roles and what they needed to develop for future positions.
- Enhanced visibility of career opportunities within the organisation, empowering employees to take control of their career development and make informed decisions about their professional growth.
By analysing and organising the roles based on competencies and skills, we provided a clear and actionable career path framework. This initiative not only simplified the process of career planning for employees but also supported the organisation’s commitment to fostering internal talent and promoting professional development.
